Emoting on Motion - Off the Wall Friday

"Tessa" taken by me this week in my studio
Okay, I admit it.  I'm a bit of a drama queen.  Not a huge drag out  - throw things kind of drama queen but I can nail bite - debate every little decision in the design process.  And that's what my problem has been this week.

You see this month, Elizabeth has us studying Motion and Movement.  At first I was excited - this is not a new topic to me.  I mean I do have a praise ladies series going which at least implies motion.  But that's really what's wrong with the pieces - they only imply it.  Not to mention once I started studying how to convey motion  - it dawn on me that I would actually have to make a piece that did just that.  Sighhhh - why did I sign up for a Master Quilt Class? (read Drama Queen)

After much swearing nail biting, I do have two good ideas in the works. (How did the wastepaper basket get so full??)  Not quite  done (need a bit refining and value studies!)but I can show you what I learned in the study.  There are some very good ways to convey motion:

Repetition:
Antoine Stevens

Action Marks:
Equillion

Freeze Motion:

Swingin' High - Nat Stuart Perks

Diagonals

Georgia O'Keeffe. Red & Orange , 1919

Streak

All use rhythm, value and pattern strongly to help convey the movement in the piece.  Now I just have to apply what I learned.

So what have you been up to creatively?

Thanks-great post! I too need to figure out how to convey motion and at this point, I haven't a clue! You pulled some great examples though!

The hand made me think of this optical illusion technique. Check it out. It's really fun to do and well is just cool.

All of your example are great, but those hands are amazing. Look forward to seeing your results.

Getting an idea a month may be a bit of a stretch for me. :-) I got the motion, but not a quilt--back to the drawing board. Love the images you found.
