I did finally managed to get the right color for the border dyed. After overdyeing it with the strongest red and letting it sit in my oven once again - it came out just as I'd imagined it. I was VERY HAPPY to have it done in time for this blog!! I also managed to make a full scale pattern of the piece and get the templates done for the hand applique of the tree. Yep - you read that right - I'm going to hand applique the tree. I've never done anything quite so large by hand (did I mention this project is 37" by 50"????)so this ought to be interesting but I just like the smooth finished line of hand applique better than machine. Fusing is out of the question since I like to get little puffs when I machine quilt. Still its going to be a challenge. . . . .Not to mention I haven't hand appliqued in about 4 years!!

The far right is perfect!
the wall hanging is looking great!
Love the color in your border fabric, it was worth the extra effort. For your tree, I'd have a hard time picking between the fabrics on either end. I think either would work.
I think you made the right decision on the tree fabric.
It's coming along beautifully! Good choice on the hand vs. machine applique...I totally agree and for the same reasons!
I guess I am just too impatient. Handwork is out of the question for me. I am sure it will be wonderful when you finally get it finished. Anything worth doing,is worth doing right. Old, old saying, but still applies.
I am amazed at the selections we have now in fabrics. Your quilt is looking great and the hand dyed fabric is great. I agree, I spend tons of time thinking about my project. Great job.
The process contains all the work. By the time you get to the quilting, you have thought out all the kinks. I think even after 4 years you will succeed at hand applique.
Getting something to match the picture in your head is so difficult! Glad you worked out the border fabric--it is just right for a Christmas wine red :)
It's like bicycle riding you never forget...isn't it? I hope so I haven't appliqued for a long time. I love the mix of blues you used for the background.
I really like this quilt. I do a lot of dyeing and I find I get the best color when I let the fabric batch in plastic bags on the driveway out in the hot sun.
Oh, the decisions always take me the most time! You made some good ones here.
