Why is it that an organizational project always looks worse before it gets better? I knew this would be a big job but WoW it's a really big job. I had no idea how much stuff I had stashed in that room over the years. I am taking it seriously though and as promised I'm documenting as I go. I decided that I'm going to have three piles....fabric that is organized by color.....fabric that is organized by collection .... fabric that is going to be donated to the sewing programs at the Erie City Mission. The nice thing about sewing for 30 years is that you now realize what fabric you will use and what you won't use! I'm blessed to find it a good home since the last time I sold it off it was a ton of work!
The first thing was emptying out the dressing room on the third floor....

But do you have enough of the right fabric? Like you, I have learned what fabric I won't ever use. I have also learned how to hone my fabric purchases so that I only buy fabric to fill gaps in my stash or for a very specific need. Those mid value fabrics can be so tempting. However, I have learned to zero on the whispers of color, darkest of values and for my own personal style fabrics that suggest sky, water and vegetation.

Hi Gwyned, I know what you mean. Luckily I learned that lesson early on. I have a few rules about buying fabric. I never pay full price, I always buy at least one dark, dark and one light light. Lately - like the last 2 years - I've only bought fabric with a more updated prints that struck my fancy or collections that will work really nice into my work. Tastes change. Plus at one time I thought I would make baby blankets to sell. So all of that can go the Mission and those ladies can take up the reins of charity sewing for now.
