Planning Playful Piecing - Off The Wall Friday
This week I got an interesting letter from Nancy Hinds. She will be my teacher during my upcoming vacation at John C. Campbell Folk School. Last year was my first time there with me learning how to paint silk. Although the class was great, I realized that all I wanted to do on my vacation was have a low maintenance pretty environment, eat well and sew. So this year I chose to take the class that would do just that called.. Playful Piecing. From the description, I knew that it would be lose enough for me to play around with color and design and not get too uptight. Sounds great right?? Well the letter made it sound even better!!
Nancy's letter tells us what to expect PLUS what we could do that week. Its a perfect way to build excitement and relieve anxiety before the class. I mean we can literally do any kind of project we want. The sky is kinda the limit. She'll be calling everyone in class to come up with a game plan on what we would like to learn or play with our piece. Most of it, obviously, will be geared toward traditional quilting, but Nancy said I could do art quilting if I wanted. She also will be discussing with us what to bring so we'll have everything we need. The goal is to have you work through the week and leave with a finished or nearly finished piece....kinda to jumpstart you toward your next!
Now after 20 years of going to Quilting By The Lake, packing for a week of sewing is a lot easier than it used to be. What wasn't so easy was narrowing down what I wanted to do. I have a couple of traditional projects that I put on the back burner for a while till I get a hankering to do them plus I'm designing a historical piece, but
really I just wanted this week to be a relaxing time with my sewing machine. So after an evening on pintrest, I decided I'm going to do some improv piecing in the nature of the Curves, but influenced by mosaics.
Am I the only quilter that is in love mosaic pieces?? More than once I've had to stop myself from taking up a new craft! So my job in the next couple of weeks is try come up with a beginning design and a palette of colors I want to use so I know what to pack. Our trip is the first week of April and I can't wait!!
So What Have You've Been Working On??
That sound like so. much. fun. You picked a winner!

ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great class, but also a lot of work. I had to smile when you called it a vacation. I hope you get some relaxing quilting in.
ReplyDeleteWishing you great relaxation all week.
ReplyDeleteThese mosaic photos are so beautiful! Enjoy your class ;)
ReplyDeleteI really like the second photo. What have I been up to? planting perennials in the new raised flower bed. And working on some polka dot 9-patches in various colors and combinations. No pictures.
ReplyDeleteHi Nina, It sounds like a great class and a wonderful teacher. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you make.
