Feelin' Like Fall - Off the Wall Friday

One thing that I've noticed that when you plan a quilt thoroughly the actual construction is a lot more relaxing.  I mean - gosh - all the important decisions are made right?!  The main idea formed -  basic design drawn - the color palette picked  - etc.

I was once again reminded of this working in my studio today.  I start playing with the colors and curves of fall - listening to Harry Potter's Goblet of Fire - and the next thing you know 6 hours had gone by and the quilt top was laid out.

It been fun playing with improvisational curves again.  I can't believe how easy they are to do these days.  I really need to play with them more!  Now that I got the basic design of this wallhanging done, I can also see why I wanted to do two of them.  Exploring simple shape in this non-threatening faux traditional styling has captured my imagination.  Plus this is fast becoming one my favorite palettes.  Sniff - Sniff - do I smell the whiff of a new series?!?!  ('cause ya know  - that's what I  really need LOL!! )

BUT -

I'm still thinkin' about switching out the green stem block.  One part of me says that its a distraction since it has such a chunky and solid feeling compared to the other stems.  The other part of me says that it has an anchoring feel to it.  Tessa gave me some wise advice - just make another one and see which you like better.  Smart isn't she?!

So what have you been up to creatively?

  1. Tessa is brilliant! I am a visual person and sometimes having the options right in front of me is better than guessing. Looking forward to seeing what you end up with!

  3. "Improvisational curves"--Is that what you call it? That's pretty much my constant way of working...I like how your piece is shaping up.

  6. I usually make extra blocks when working with blocks so that I have a "tosser" or two. I don't mind extras, they can go on the back, they can make sample sandwiches to practice quilting designs and/or thread choices and they can go into the orphan pile. I love free form curves!

  9. I don't think the green stem block looks out of place at all. It adds needed variety for one thing. But it is no more chunky and solid feeling than the stems in the circle block in the upper left corner. The two balance each other in a way.

  10. Love how this is shaping up. I think it would make a great series and I don't find the green stem block distracting. Can't wait to see it complete.

  11. Here's my million dollar opinion......I like it. It seems to fit in with the flow of the entire piece well. The green pushes your eye out and moves it around its edges.

I personally love this piece. Leaves and trees are a favorite of mine. This is I aspiring me to pull out my leaves and get it quilted!
