A Naked Lady, A Toilet & Art - Off the Wall Friday

Now why would a lady decided to sit nude on a toilet  for two days and invite perfect strangers to do the same across from her?  Well to make a statement!!

That's exactly what artist, Lisa Levy did in her performance piece, "The Artist is Humbly Present" in January.  The piece was a direct parody of the artist Marina Abramovicc's 2010 MoMA piece "The Artist is Present" in which the artist sat in a chair inviting visitors to sit across from her.

Levy, said that she has been thinking of doing the piece for a long time as a statement on what is going on in the art world.

"Ego and pretense has seriously f----d  with the
quality of work being made.  I’m also tired of the bulls**t trendy art dialogue about how the art world is driven by rich people who want shiny work and don’t care about meaning as well." Levy stated on her facebook page and in interviews.

Nudity and the toilet are symbols of humility that is apparently lacking on the art scene today.

Now, I realize that Levy used a bit of humor, a bit of shock to get her point across. Not to mention  all the attention and publicity she got.  But it really did get me thinking of the what constitutes art these days.   And that could be spark a long discussion  on the topic.. . . a very longggggg discussion.  Still her piece did get me thinking.

and that's what art is suppose to do.

So what have been up to creatively?

I guess she thinks she is making a statement, but how can anyone take her seriously with such a silly stunt? One has to wonder if she got up to take a potty break or just stayed put?
