Back to the Pretties - Design Wall Monday

Somewhere in the last couple of weeks, I sorta stalled on this project.  Going by and looking at the mess that had become my sewing hole, I was wondering why.  While I picked up the room and got it into workable shape again - I realized something.  I stalled right at the time I decided to make the applique basket for a medallion middle. So what's up with that???  I mean, I really do love hand applique and have been missing the quietness of it  --- I have a great book with instructions and tons of patterns for baskets ---- what's the problem???  I realized what I didn't like about applique was followin' the stinkin' pattern.   I mean is it just me or is it really hard to get everything just in the right places??  Plus when you're all done - it looks just like the pattern which is obviously someone else's work.

So I put my big girl pants on and said - "I don't need no stinkin' pattern!"  - Closed the book and just cut me a 24" square of pretty blush fabric for in the middle.  I thought about how I envisioned the  basket and how was the best way to make it.  So I cut some brown strips - Ironed them in half (lengthwise) and  placed them somewhere where I thought the basket should start .  Then I sewed down the raw edge side with my sewing machine and blind stitched the finished side.  WOOT!  One little part of the basket done.  Now, I just gotta build from there.

I've never did an applique like this - where I kinda made it up as I went.  This ought to be interesting.   Not to mention maybe I should take my own advice and try to learn something new with each project.   It looks like we have a week of rain and cold so its going to be a good week to sew!

Ohhh and the Open Studio Day went great!!  But that story is for tomorrow!

I tell my students all the time......the first "original" design you do will be the hardest...after that.....you'll wonder why you waited so long".....the best thing about making it up as you go along is that no one knows what it was supposed to look like...therefore....it will be right! Applique is no different... Can't wait to see what you've created!

What a great idea. And we will be able to see how your mind works as it comes together. ;-)

Have fun with your appy on the fly! BTW, I would love to see how those baskets look if you were to turn them so that the blocks in all four corners point out towards their corner. Did that make sense? Instead of all of them pointing in the same direction. Just curious as to how they would look.

Flying by the seat of your pants is scary but exciting. I'm there with you and cheering from the stands!
